Impacted Canines - Freedom, CA
If you have impacted canines or wisdom teeth, you may need to undergo a tooth extraction procedure. Dr. Andrés F. Herrera provides wisdom tooth extractions and other necessary tooth extractions in his office and can work to improve your overall health.
How Impacted Teeth Form
We refer to a tooth that has become “stuck,’” or cannot erupt properly to function as it was meant to, as an impacted tooth. Many people have impacted wisdom teeth, which is a condition where the wisdom teeth are unable to erupt in the back of the jaw, sometimes causing infection or pain. Since most people do not need their wisdom teeth, we often recommend a wisdom tooth extraction for impacted teeth. In addition to the wisdom teeth being impacted, patients can have impacted teeth in both the upper and lower jaw areas that need to be removed.
Treatment of Impacted Teeth
Many patients tend to suffer the effects of impacted teeth, such as an infection or pain in the area, and need to have their teeth removed. Dr. Herrera may recommend wisdom teeth extraction to patients of all ages, depending on whether the impacted adult teeth are causing extreme crowding or may be at risk for becoming infected. Treating impacted teeth as early as possible can prevent many oral health and orthodontic problems later in life.
Recent studies show that early identification of impacted canine and wisdom teeth may require treatment at a younger age. If Dr. Herrera or a hygienist has identified a potential problem related to impacted teeth, we may refer the patient to an orthodontist for early evaluation. In some cases, Dr. Herrera can remove any extra teeth or growths that are blocking eruption of developing adult teeth.
